The Grand Bazaar

*
One of my favurite places in the city, the Grand Bazaar that is the oldest and largest shopping mall of the world. There are 64 avenues and streets, 2 covered bazaar (bedesten), 16 inns, 22 gates and about 3600 stores. It has indoor area of 45.000 meter square, and about 20.000 persons work and depending on the season, 300 to 500 persons per day visit.
*
I can't say that I visited and know all these stores and streets, and etc. Every time I find something new and I explore a new streets, or stores... But the main part is not going only for shopping. I love to be in this otantic and historical place. To breathe this ambience is really amazing, has a great attractive touches if you interest and love historical places and things.
*
On the other hand Grand Bazaar was the important place of economy during the Ottoman Empire and as it is said, Topkapı Palace (Ottoman Empire Palace) became the brain of empire, and Grand Bazaar became the heart of economy! At the beginning of 19th century, when banks and bankers started to settle in Galata, the heart of economy of the empire started to beat here. *
But today, still the heart of the gold exchange and jewellers are is here.
*
Turkish poet Orhan Veli Kanık described Grand Bazaar and the treasury hidden inside by his poem ending with the lines
*
“Do not underrate Grand Bazaar,
Grand Bazaar is a closed book.”
*
Grand Bazaar is being the oldest bank, and the greatest and the oldest shopping mall, one of the most mysterious and gorgeous places in the world.
*
You can find more details about Grand Bazaar in this link, it is Grand Bazaar's web site.*
Grand Bazaar actually not the original name in my own language, we call it like that "Kapalı Çarşı" it means closed mall; but this word "closed" are used for to describe the place, mentioning that it is not an outdoor bazaar.

The map at the top of the page is all about Grand Bazaar. Still there are so many things that I don't know and probably I'ven't been there too. I usually enter from the right side of the map, there is an enterance in front of the Mosque,... In this area the name of streets are so historical too, and they all show us the categories of stores.
